 Philosophy of World Language Education
Township of Ocean Schools

“Why should any nation limit its horizons to a single language when the global economy rewards those who accommodate diversity?”   (Crawford, 1995).

The Vision
The mission of the world language program is to develop students’ ability to use language in real life situations. To have students be able to interact and communicate with members of other culture while gaining a greater understanding and compassion for the cultural practices and products of different countries.   The goals of our program is that our students:

v   Communicate in a world language within our society and the world.

v   Develop an appreciation of different cultures.

v   Become contributing members and life-long learners in a global society.

v   Prepare students to use world languages in their career choices.

It has been reported that students who studied an average of four or more years of world language scored higher on the verbal SAT than students who studied four years in any other subject.   Students’ math scores for those who studied world language for four years were identical to those who studied math for four years (The College Entrance Examination Board, 1992; Cooper, 1987).

The Township of Ocean School District is committed to providing a quality second language program that is communicative, gains knowledge of other cultures and connects with other disciplines and acquires information and enhances the understanding of English.   The World Language Curriculum is aligned with the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards.   Detailed curriculum guides are available upon request.

The current World Language curriculum is clustered into three grade levels:   elementary (grades 1-4), intermediate (grades 5-8), and high school (9-12).   The elementary program consists of French, Italian and Spanish which is broken into three cycles.   Students will have seven exposures to each language.   At the end of fourth grade some of the tasks students will be able to complete are:

v   Greet one another and be able to conduct a dialogue

v   Perform simple mathematical operations with numbers,

v   Tell about themselves, their age, family, body parts, health

v   Discuss weather and seasons

v   Understand holidays and culture of various different countries all done in the target language.

v   Have a knowledge of Foreign Language careers

The intermediate program (grades 5 – 8) students can select French, Italian or Spanish and they will study their chosen language for four years while attending the Intermediate School .

  Instruction is offered:

Grade 5         One class twice a week for 36 weeks.

Grade 6            Class 5 days a week for 18 weeks.

Grade 7            Class 5 days a week for 18 weeks.

Grade 8            Class 5 days a week for 36 weeks.

Upon leaving the Township of Ocean Intermediate students have the choice to continue with the same language or change and begin the study of another language.

The high school program is comprised of French, Italian, and Spanish.   Students are required by the State of New Jersey to successfully complete 1 year of world language study for graduation.   Students have the opportunity to study the same language through their senior year.
