A Message from James Stefankiewicz, Ed.D.
Superintendent of Schools

Dear Parent/Guardian:

The 2019–2020 school year is filled with exciting activities and events that will enrich the education of all of our students. This calendar will act as a valuable resource for your family. Please note that athletic schedules are published separately. To accommodate the interests of our students, many new events have been added. PTAs, club advisors and teachers have worked hard to provide our schools with opportunities that will expand the educational and cultural experience of our students. Their efforts are truly appreciated.

The school district website,, provides the latest information related to individual schools as well as the district. There you will find direct links to our curriculum, policy information, philosophy of education, resources for parents, school calendars and links for alumni. When you visit our home page, be sure to register for Web-BackPack. This service will send school and district level information directly to your computer or phone. You can also download our new School District app from our website. And as always, follow us on Twitter (@JimStefank) and Facebook.

Our schools were busy places over the summer. An extended year program for special education students was hosted at the Wanamassa School, and an elementary academic support program was provided at the Ocean Township Elementary School. This summer, we conducted a STEAM bridge program for select students in grades five through nine.

With the untiring support of the community and a 5-year strategic plan to guide our direction, this school year is marked by some very exciting initiatives. This year all of our schools have applied to be designated as Future Ready Schools. We are also applying to the New Jersey Department of Education to expand early childhood/pre-k opportunities for students. To help students with educational technology, our Google Chromebook initiative continues with replacement devices for two grade levels. OTHS will be expanding its career and technical education offerings with expanded computer science initiatives. OTHS also welcomes the second cohort of the Spartan School of Technology, the third year of students for the Spartan School of Business & Finance, and the inaugural cohort of the Spartan School of Visual & Performing Arts.

Our schools continue to rank in the upper echelon of schools in the state and nation. Ocean Township High School has been ranked by Newsweek magazine as one of America’s Top High Schools. OTHS has also been named one of America’s Most Challenging High Schools by the Washington Post. These accomplishments are a testament to our students, staff, and administrators. While similar rankings do not exist for intermediate and elementary schools, our high school would not achieve this level of accomplishment if not for the tireless efforts of our intermediate and elementary students, staff, and administration. These schools continuously outperform peer schools from across the state. No matter the circumstance, Township of Ocean students are well prepared to tackle the next phase of their educational and/or professional life.

Each September we invite parents to renew their partnership with our teachers. This partnership is the most effective way to foster communication, cooperation and collaboration for the educational benefit of the children in our fine community.

Best wishes for the school year.
